Both sides began issuing coins in 1948 and both are famous for their long series of commemorative coins. East German citizens did not have access to the silver versions of their commemorative coins, which were only meant for export. Thus, when Germany reunited in 1990, and East Germans were able to purchase their former country's coins, there was surge in demand for East German coins. They remain one of the most popular areas of German numismatics for two reasons: they are affordable; and the series are all closed. Published: 2021-04-28 - Modified: 2026-04-19 - URL: https://germancoins.com/raw-german-empire-coins-1871-1919-for-sale/ In 1871, Otto von Bismarck unified all of the German States into a new Union known as the German Empire. Each State would continue to issue silver coins of 2,3, and 5 Marks in their name, but all of the minor coins from 1 Pfennig through 1 mark would have a uniform design under the name "Deutsches Reich. " Collectors will find this to be a fun and challenging area because of its lengthy run, the wide variety of different mints, and the challenge of finding high-grade examples of coins that have low catalog values. One of my favorite series is the 1 Marks, which were of the same size and composition of American Seated Liberty and Barber Quarters, yet they sell for a fraction of the price. For instance, most of the denominations of 1 Pfennig to 1 Mark retained their designs from the Weimar Republic until 1936, after which the eagle and swastika design appeared. Nazi Germany produced silver coins until 1939, after which strategic and precious metals were utilized to bolster the war effort. Thus, from 1941 to the end of World War II, German coins were made of only zinc or aluminum. Included here are the rare 1940-1941 Military 5 and 10 Pfennig coins with holes in the center (Reichskreditkassen) and Allied Occupation coins, which mimicked the 1, 5, and 10 Pfennig coins, but without the swastika. You’ll find a wide variety of denominations, including Stubers, Pfennigs, Thalers(and their fractions and multiples), Groschen, Batzen, Hellers, and so many more. Most German States coins are reasonably priced and hundreds of them, if not thousands, can be purchased for under $20. Most collectors of German States coins fall into two categories: 1) those who seek one coin from each issuing entity or 2) those who focus on a particular issuing entity. This list includes coins from the German states, regions and cities from 1500 up. Prior to the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, German coinage consisted of a variety of different denominations that were unique to a given region or city/state. The poorer entities issued copper or low-grade silver coins while the richer areas produced large silver coins or glittering gold coins. After Germany became an Empire in 1871, the individual states (such as Hamburg, Prussia, Saxony, and others) continued to issue coins, but they all had a unified reverse consisting of a German eagle with a shield on its breast and a crown atop its head. Likewise, the denominations became more unified to symbolize the cooperation of the states in the new Empire. This list was updated on December 26, 2022. The ways in which people collect these coins is as varied as the coins themselves. Some people focus on a particular country to the exclusion of all others; some collect by a theme (such as ships, elephants, or women on coins); some attempt to collect one example from every issuing authority; others choose particular denominations (such as Crown-sized silver coins); and the list could go on and on. World coins offer you an opportunity to choose your very own collecting path and to build your collection on your terms. Below, you'll find an extensive collection of coins from A to Z (sorry, no Zanzibar or Zaire coins... yet). For certified examples, be sure to look here. In the earliest years, Porcelain coins were substitutes for the real silver and gold money that disappeared from circulation after World War I. In later years, the coins did not bear a denomination, so they are considered medals or tokens. The porcelain coins below are listed in numerical order by Scheuch numbers (Karl Scheuch wrote the definitive reference book on these pieces). This is contrary to the belief, by some, that "Notgeld" means "Not Money" -- in other words, tokens with no monetary value. Such is not the case. In fact, Notgeld circulated in Germany and was used as money when all the official currency disappeared from circulation during the fiscal crisis and inflationary period after World War I. This left it up to municipalities and regional governing bodies to issue their own coinage if for no other reason than to facilitate commerce. Thousands of individual Notgeld varieties exist, making this a very challenging and enjoyable way to collect. Most collectors attempt to obtain one coin or token from each of the issuing authorities. Other, more energetic, collectors attempt to obtain all of the individual varieties. This was the introduction of a unified coinage following the creation of the German Empire in 1871. The design of the new 1 Pfennig was simple. A large 1 dominated the center of the obverse. The legend "Deutches Reich" identified the coin as being from Germany. The date appeared on the right side and the word "Pfennig" appeared below. The central design on the reverse was a stylized German Imperial Eagle with a shield on its chest and a crown and ribbon above. Two mintmarks appeared at the base of the reverse, one on each side. For this series of 1 Pfennigs, the following mints produced coins: A - BerlinB - HannoverC - FrankfurtD - Munchen (Munich)E - Dresden (1872-1887); Muldenhutten (1887-1889)F - Stuttgart G - KarlsruheH - DarmstadtJ - Hamburg Mintages varied depending on the year and the mint. In 1875, the Berlin Mint produced a record 64,668,670 million coins. The lowest mintage of 51,776 occurred in 1873 at the Munich Mint. The rarest coin in this series is the 1887-E 1 Pfennig with a thick period after the word Pfennig, of which only 25 were made, supposedly the last of the 1 Pfennigs issued at Dresden before the changeover to the Muldenhutten Mint. There are literally thousands of different coin types spanning hundreds of years and a variety of coining techniques. To complicate matters, there is the myth that European grading standards are stricter than U. S. standards. Then there is the complete lack of grading guides for German coins. What about descriptive grades versus numerical grades? What do the Germans think of commercial, third-party grading (certified, or "slabbed" coins)? Actually, with a little experience and assistance, German coin grading is no more difficult than grading American coins. Let's start with the basics. German coins may be graded using the same terminology as American coins, as follows: GOODVery well worn, with only outlines of the major design elements visible, but it should be completely identifiable as to date. Most or all of the legends should be visible. VERY GOODWell worn, but with all lettering and devices outlined and with some detail beginning to show. FINEApproximately 50% of the detail will remain. VERY FINEApproximately 75% of the detail will remain, but the coin will have no luster. EXTREMELY FINEApproximately 80-90% of the detail will remain, and the coin must have some luster. ABOUT UNCIRCULATEDLight friction on the high points, must have luster and smooth, original surfaces. UNCIRCULATEDMust have no wear, but may have bagmarks. Uncirculated coins may be broken down further, as follows: UNCIRCULATEDUnworn, but lots of bagmarks, hairlines, and the luster or toning may be dull. This is a low-end Uncirculated coin. Not only does the series enjoy a strong collector base in its home country, but American collectors, many of German descent, continue to enjoy the variety and challenge they represent. Krause Publications' 1994 release of the "Standard Catalog of German Coins, 1601 to Present", a 952 page reference, confirms their popularity. At first glance, German coins appear daunting. These pieces have been issued for hundreds of years by a variety of rulers representing numerous cities, states, regions and periods. Commemorative issues seem to be the rule rather than the exception, and the wide variety of individual coin types can seem overwhelming. Nevertheless, if you are seeking a lifetime of collecting pleasure, you will enjoy the challenge these fascinating coins offer. The numismatist will find German coins a fertile field, virtually in its infancy compared to United States coins. For newcomers to the series, I offer several collecting suggestions. Simply throwing money at this series most often results in a meaningless collection. Because it is so large, it is nearly impossible to collect every piece, even if you have unlimited funds. Specialists with a long-range plan and well-defined goals will obtain the greatest satisfaction and build the most meaningful collections. The suggestions offered here are not meant to be all-inclusive or inflexible, since ultimately each individual controls the destiny... - Published: 2019-07-18 - Modified: 2019-09-06 - URL: https://germancoins.com/privacy-policy/ Who we are Our website address is: http://germancoins. com. From Wikipedia: Heinrich Friedrich Karl Reichsfreiherr vom und zum Stein (25 October 1757 – 29 June 1831), commonly known as Baron vom Stein, was a Prussian statesman who introduced the Prussian reforms, which paved the way for the unification of Germany. He promoted the abolition of serfdom, with indemnification to territorial lords; subjection of the nobles to manorial imposts; and the establishment of a modern municipal system. Stein was from an old Franconian family. He was born on the family estate near Nassau, studied at Göttingen, and entered the civil service. Prussian conservatism hampered him in his efforts to bring about changes. In 1807, he was removed from office by the King for refusing to accept the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs but was recalled after the Peace of Tilsit. After it became known that he had written a letter in which he criticized Napoleon, Stein was obliged to resign, which he did on 24 November 1808 and retired to the Austrian Empire, from which he was summoned to the Russian Empire by Tsar Alexander I in 1812. After the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, Stein became head of the council for the administration of the reconquered German countries. - Published: 2023-01-21 - Modified: 2026-03-30 - URL: https://germancoins.com/coin/coinking-provenance-west-germany-1978-f-5-mark-balthasar-neumann-pcgs-pr69dcam/ - Price: 100.00 USD - Denominations: 5 Mark - Product type: simple - Product visibility: outofstock - Product categories: CoinKing® Numismatic Services, Certified West Germany Coins, Certified German, US, & World Coins, West Germany (1948-2001), Coins - Product Country: Germany, Third Reich COINKING™ PROVENANCE! From Wikipedia: Gottfried Wilhelm (von) Leibniz (1 July 1646 – 14 November 1716) was a German polymath active as a mathematician, philosopher, scientist and diplomat. He is one of the most prominent figures in both the history of philosophy and the history of mathematics. He wrote works on philosophy, theology, ethics, politics, law, history and philology. Leibniz also made major contributions to physics and technology, and anticipated notions that surfaced much later in probability theory, biology, medicine, geology, psychology, linguistics and computer science. In addition, he contributed to the field of library science: while serving as overseer of the Wolfenbüttel library in Germany, he devised a cataloging system that would have served as a guide for many of Europe's largest libraries. LI and TY of LIBERTY are visible. Coins are named in strange ways. Normally, they are named after the design elements (i. e Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Buffalo Nickel, etc. ) or the person on the coin (i. e. Washington Quarter Dollar, Franklin Half Dollar, etc. ). Sometimes, however, they are named after the designer (i. e. Morgan Dollar, Paquet Double Eagle, etc. ). Technically, the Dimes of this style, issued from 1892-1916, should be called Liberty Head Dimes, but for some reason they were named after their designer, Charles Barber. The same is true of the similarly designed Quarter Dollars and Half Dollars of this period. The Barber Half Dollar series, unlike the Barber Dimes and Quarters, is within the means of most collectors. There are no ultra-rarities in the series and most examples can be obtained with ease. Mid-range grades, such as Very Fine and Extremely Fine, can be a real challenge to find, plus they can be pricey because they are so popular. - Published: 2022-02-25 - Modified: 2026-03-30 - URL: https://germancoins.com/coin/usa-1915-s-barber-half-dollar-good-to-very-good/ - Price: 20.00 USD - Product type: simple - Product visibility: outofstock - Product categories: United States Coins, Price List US Coins, Coins - Product Country: USA - Product Grade: About Good USA 1915-S Barber Half Dollar, Good to Very Good.
